The late-1960s hippie movement emerged from San Francisco?s Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood to espouse a new society celebrating love and rock music. One of the movement?s maestros was Chet Helms (1942-2005), whose Avalon Ballroom hosted Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, and countless other legendary rockers. Helms commissioned concert posters from local artists whose style mirrored the acid-tinged counterculture.
